The Bollenhut Maker

small group · half-day including travel to the Gutachtal · on request

Fourteen woollen pompoms, weighing up to two kilograms; red for unmarried women, black for married women: the Bollenhut is the region’s best-known piece of traditional dress, and it is still made by hand by only a few women.

One of them opens her Gutachtal workshop for you, just under an hour from the Maison. You see how a pompom takes shape and wind one yourself. It is harder than it looks, and that is precisely the point.

What you have made travels home with you: your own pompom, a keepsake from an afternoon that does not usually take place for visitors.

In a small group, exclusively through us. We are happy to arrange the journey to the Gutachtal.
