From the Valley to the Snow

There are two winters here. The valley often stays mild, with vines silvered by frost, clear air and lights glowing in half-timbered houses. The snow lives higher up, on the Hornisgrinde and along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße, less than twenty minutes from our door.

Up here, you can make the most of whatever the season brings: snowshoeing along the edge of the national park, a winter walk to the Mummelsee, a few runs on the small slopes by the Schwarzwaldhochstraße. These are the quiet winter days the northern Black Forest was made for.

And then the way back: by four, the light over the valley turns blue; by half past four, you are back home. The sauna is warm, and tea is waiting in your kitchen, or perhaps something stronger from the village. Which eau-de-vie is right after a day in the snow is something Sasbachwalden has never agreed on.
